Flashback Friday

Ok, I'm not sure if I should say how long ago I did these mixed media works, but it was for my HSC in high school.

It was the time of the breaking down of the Berlin Wall and I had somehow gotten my hands onto a TimeLIFE magazine. I looked through the pages for some inspiration, and article after article was about some form of protest elsewhere in the world. I remember feeling quite sad about seeing so much anger, and then seeing jubilation in the faces of others, especially after the Wall came down. I had never travelled outside of where I lived at that age, so it was all really new to me. The photography in that one magazine made a huge impact on my young mind.

So I chose to do 6 mixed media works for the Higher School Certificate and here they are. A series based on Protest.

A Child Free Studio

After a long school holidays, the time has come to start the year. I'll have a child free studio after I take the little one off to his first day at big school this morning - there will be tears, I'm sure!

I have loads of inspiration, from trips to the forest, the zoo, the valley and the sea, I really have no excuse not to come up with some great paintings this year. I still plan to do a lot of pattern designs, but large scale paintings will be my priority. I've bought my roll of Belgian Linen and stretcher bars, and I plan on making them up early next week.

I worked on a lot of smaller drawings, patterns and paintings last year so I could start selling on Etsy and Society 6. I love designing repeat patterns for iPhone cases etc. and now clocks, they make me happy.

As Valentine's Day is on the horizon, my latest design is a Heart design.
Art Prints available here.
The repeat pattern is below. What do you think?

Artist Series - Paper Artist, Gunjan Aylawadi

I first came across the beautiful paper art of Gunjan Aylawadi on Instagram. I was blown away that the artworks were made from rolled paper. I had to have a closer look so I visited her website. Seriously, these works are so gorgeous, I just had to share...

The Thriving Artist Summit

A few months ago I signed up for The Thriving Artist Summit (It's FREE!!) I never realised how much information I would receive. After listening to the Experts , I have focus, a direction for my art branding, and my art making process. It is wonderful way to help any Art Business grow, especially when all we want to really do is make Art!

I took pages and pages of handwritten notes for each interview so I could go back to them at a later time. It took quite a while to listen to all the Speakers, and I've still got a couple of interviews to go, but it has been so enlightening and worth every minute (in between family, painting, and housework). Each speaker has a free gift that comes along with their talk as well - there is a WEALTH of information!

Topics covered include:

Making Your Creative Biz a Real Success
Build Your Brand for Your Ideal Buyers
Price for Real Profit and Growth
Increase Your Sales with Marketing, PR, and Social Media
Diversify into Licensing, Wholesale, and Direct-to-Consumer
Get Into Galleries, Shows, and Raise Project Funds
Develop Your Creative Practice

There are around 28 speakers all together, Lawyers, Leadership Coaches, Artists, Artist Coaches, Gallerists, Art Consultants and Licensing Agents, Branding Experts, Social Media Experts etc. Seriously, it's the best information I have received as an artist in the last 10 years!

The Summit has been extended until January 31st, 2014, after that, you won't be able to listen to the interviews anymore.

A couple of my favourite interviews were by the Artist Coaches - Cory Huff, Maria Brophy and Laura C George. They all have newsletters that I have signed up for, to keep me motivated.

I have a few more of the interviews left to listen to, so I'm sure I'll have a few more fave's by the end. Do yourself a favour, sign up and have a little listen, there are loads to choose from. A lot of the information could be used by non-artists too!

Thanks Bonnie for a great Summit!

Happy listening.....

Reflecting on 2013

2013 was a really great year for my Art making, I managed to spend a lot of hours drawing in my sketchbooks. I have a constant stream of ideas, and getting them down right away is always a challenge. With my little one starting big school at the end of January, my days will hopefully be filled with painting, drawing, printing (and the occasional housework).

I've tried to create beautiful patterns in the last few months, a few of which you can see below. My website is up and running, it's an online portfolio that I hope to add hundreds more photos to this year. My Society6 shop is doing well, and my Original Art is selling over in my Etsy Shop too.

I am also hoping to work on a larger scale again this year. My studio has been cleaned up, so there is now plenty of room to bring those big canvases in. So please, check back often, I'm going to have loads to blog about this year!
