Delightful Daisies

Colours and shapes and all the lovely things in between. I really enjoy painting kids pictures, they are fun and exciting. These two were done a while ago but have only just found themselves homes. Neopolitan was inspired by another artists painting that I saw a while ago. I forget who, the colours where completely different, but the idea is the same.

I think doing girly paintings is a bit more fun for me. Being around boy things all the time becomes a little boring. I like the variation between the two. I have so many half done paintings at the moment. I like to move quickly between them, but I also like when something is finally finished. But because I have so many ideas, I like to at least draw it on the canvas before I forget it.

There are lots of canvases all stacked up very high in my studio. Sometimes I come across one that I have forgotten that I have even done. Then, I get this urge to rearrange the paintings on the walls in my house and put up some new ones and give others a rest for a while. It keeps it interesting for me, and it keeps me motivated to do more.

I am off to do some more painting now if the little fella will let me.

Happy hump day!

My Dad the Photographer

I asked my Dad on the weekend if I can borrow his photo slides that he has taken over the years, especially from when I was a little kid. He has this amazing old brown leather photo suitcase that he has had for longer than I have been alive. It is so full of photos that I have never seen.

I started looking through them this morning and came across so many of my sister and I. The photos are better than a lot of the ones that have been printed over the years. The colours are amazing, and the picture is really sharp. I was really surprised, it is like discovering lost treasure. I am very excited to explore some more.

I think this is of me playing with trucks and my beautiful mum.

This is me and my uncle in my usual state, with food all over my face.

This is my older sister and I looking at the horse.

I can't wait to get some developed. I love looking at old photos. When Luca gets older, he will have a billion and one pics that we have taken. Thank goodness for digital.

Happy snapping!

A crazy weekend...

We had a 40th Wedding Anniversary Party for my parents on Sunday. It was such a lovely day, they had most of their family and friends there, and they had a really great time.

Now it's time to get back into the painting. I have a few to do over the next month or so. Mostly commission work which is good. At least I know what I have to do and where they are going.

First though, I have to clean this house. Kindy day for Luca is cleaning day for me...

Hi Ho, Hi Ho, a cleaning I will go...

My friends are Artists too....

Oops, I forgot to post this the other day...

:: Acrylic on Canvas on Board by Belynda Henry ::

Belynda has been a good friend of mine since Primary School. We loved being artistic together all through High School and on to University. We both studied at Sydney College of the Arts from 1991-1993. Belynda became an Art Teacher for a few years after leaving Uni, and then decided to become a full time Professional Artist soon thereafter. She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions which have been fantastic to see. The most recent at Richard Martin Galleries in Woollahra, Sydney.

I have always admired Belynda and the way she works. She has always been an inspiration to me and to the way I create things. She works so hard and the ideas all seem to flow so naturally for her.
I can't wait for her next exhibition.

:: Watercolor on Paper by John Tanner ::

Tanner and I have been good friends for about 9 years now. We love to do CRAZY things together when we see each other. He is a very artistic person and surprises me all the time with the wonderful things that he can do. He gave me this artwork of the Empire State Building before we moved away from NYC in 2003. I will frame it once we move into our next house. I really love the colors he has used. He also gave me an awesome framed black and white photograph for my 30th birthday which is still wrapped up in storage. Thanks Tanner! I can't wait to see him again. Maybe Mexico in October????

Keep Smiling!

:: my new kids art logo ::

I sketched this up last night. The bird is a puppet I have had since childhood and means a lot to me. I thought I would use it in the logo because I have just found it again and it's cute. Luca loves to play with him and even uses a cool voice pretending it's the bird. It has started to fall apart a little because it is probably 25-30 years old. Well loved I would say.

Also, Happy Birthday to my lovely friend Jodie today.

Have a great day!

Poor little boy....

What a week! After writing about Luca being under the weather on Tuesday, we ended up having to go to the ER in an ambulance on Tuesday afternoon after Kindy. He had an awful barking cough and couldn't breathe. They diagnosed him with croup, and he and I had to spend the night in the hospital. It was so crazy and scary, and after the Ambo's got here and gave him some adrenaline, he was bouncing off the walls. He was such a sweet little thing on the ride to the hospital, asking the paramadic about everything in the back of the ambulance. He was such a good little boy the whole time, even when it took most of the following day for the Doctor to arrive and to discharge him.

So what I thought would be a productive week in terms of creativity, became a week of craziness. Luca and I just snuggled most days and all I really care about is his wellbeing. He is on the mend now, still has a little bit of asthma now and then, but all in all feeling better. The Doc told him to take it easy this weekend, so that is what we will do. Plenty of colouring and play doh, and tons more cuddles.

Happy weekend to you.

Two posts today...

Look what I got! Look what I got!

I got a bit excited at the fabric store and came out with a little more than expected, but I promise I will use it all. Best go and start making...

Hee hee!!!

I like fabric - who me?

Good morning. I had an awful night of getting up every 2 hours or so to Luca who has a really yucky cold. He is going to Kindy today for a few hours so I can get a ton of things done. Everyone else sends their kids to Kindy with runny noses, so I thought I would too. It would be virtually impossible to get anything done if I didn't. I have decided to give him a short day though. Hopefully he will be fine.

I really want to go to the fabric (yes, that's right...fabric) stores that I have been trying to get to for the last few weeks. I know, fabric is my sisters thing, what is wrong with me??? I have no idea, I have almost become obsessed with looking at beautiful fabrics on peoples blogs. I even went so far as to buy some online from the U.S. A lovely bundle of Amy Butler fabrics came to me a few weeks ago, and when I opened the package I was unbelievably excited. I have been too frightened to cut any of it though.

Project One

Project Two

Project Three

Aren't the fabrics lovely? I would have to say that I am not really a sewer. The most sewing I have done is some roman blinds and a few cushions about 4 years ago. It doesn't help that my sewing machine has been in storage since we moved back to Australia in 2003 (along with half of our furniture).

Anyway, that is why I am going to the fabric stores today. I need a smaller project to start with, so I thought I would make some kind of stuffed animal or something like that. I am into felt at the moment too, so we will see what they have, and then decide while I am there what I will get.

I also want some of the new fabrics from Anna Maria Horner's new Chocolate Lollipop range. I could probably do a lot with a bundle of fat quarters. I will have to get online tonight and order some from the U.S. They are much cheaper, especially with the Aussie $$ the way it is at the moment. Really good exchange rate.

I also plan to do some painting today, on what... I don't know, maybe one of the 5 or 6 unfinished pieces. I like to keep a few going at the same time. Depending on the day, I may want to work on my large scale paintings, or small kids paintings. I can never tell until I wake up that day. OK, I must do some more work on my NY series. There you go... decision made.

Ooh, I have a busy day ahead. I hope yours is productive too.

Keep smiling and don't forget to stop and smell the roses.

The Little Monsters

I painted these recently. I have been inspired by illustrator Lori Joy Smith in doing these small paintings of little monsters. I love the way she paints and and the way she puts things together. I thought I would put them up in Luca's room for some fun. It is sometimes really refreshing to paint something that you are not used to painting. Sometimes if I see something I like, I will use it for reference in doing my own paintings... I guess that's called INSPIRATION. I just thought these were fun.

It's a glorious day outside for a May day. We are off to the park for a while.

Working Again.

With one New York painting completed, another 2 well underway, and also a few more sketched and ready to go, it strikes me that I’m into another series. These works are a departure from any previous works I have done but still have the 'Monique' feel about them. I’ll have to think of a title for the new series. Things are buzzing around in my head - but nothing that clicks just yet. The intention behind this grouping is quite different, the execution is a different process from anything else, and the end product looks different as well. They are textured, and more free.

I should get one finished today with any luck. It’s a nice feeling, to be working quickly and feeling so inspired and satisfied with the results. Yep, it's Kindy day! I'm free, I'm free...

Have fun!
